Bangkok is a city unlike any other in the world. As the capital of Thailand, it is quite friendly to foreigners, and once you get a sense of it, not too hard to negotiate. At once deeply rooted in the traditional life of a Buddhist nation and exceedingly, utterly modern and international, it redefines the idea of a metropolis. One finds steel skyscrapers next to wooden temples, upscale dining next to street-carts, multiplex cinemas and traditional folk theater, all co-existing and calling the city home. More so than any other place, it combines the traditional and the contemporary.
The Artist Intensive is based at Patravadi Theatre, across the Chao Phraya River from the Grand Palace, next to the Royal Temple of Wat Rakang, in Thonburi, one of the city's oldest neighborhoods. The Theatre itself is unlike any facility in the West - a self contained complex with several performance spaces, offices, apartments, scenic, costume, and craft shops, a cafe and a koi pond. Within the busy metropolis of Bangkok, it is both a lush tropical garden oasis and a state of the art theater center. With nearby access to water taxis and ferry service across the river, the Theatre is an easy starting and returning point from which to explore the city.
