Theater Mitu’s education initiatives combine rigorous physical training with deep intellectual investigation to support students in developing a sustainable and disciplined artistic practice. Drawing from a wide range of global performance traditions, and driven by a theory we call WHOLE THEATER, the company challenges artists to investigate, interrogate, and innovate theater and art making. Theater Mitu’s embodied methodology engages the visual, aural, intellectual, emotional and spiritual life of the artist. Our training invites participants to question not only how they make art, but why.
Theater Mitu focuses on education in four main sections:
Every year, Theater Mitu brings together a group of international participants, American teaching artists, and masters from around the world to engage in a long-form intensive that combines both practice and research. Hosted around the world, the exact of the details of the program vary from year to year, but it usually happens in the months of June, July and/or August. Previous locations include India, Thailand and Japan.
The company offers month-long, semester-long or core curriculum classes in WHOLE THEATER, the company’s training and creation methodology. The coursework includes the development of the artist as researcher, a unique physical laboratory for the performer and creator, as well as in-depth sessions with new, interactive technologies and tools. Classes have been offered at Tisch School of the Arts, NYU Abu Dhabi, Bard College, The National University of Mexico (UNAM) and DuocUC (Santiago, Chile)
These six to ten-week long residencies offer project-based intensives. Led by Rubén Polendo and other company members, these productions guide participants through creation, rehearsal, and presentation of work by way of Theater Mitu’s WHOLE THEATER process. In the past, collaborations have included Juilliard, Bard College, NYU Tisch School of the Arts graduate and undergraduate programs, and more.
Internships are built around the company’s current activity and programming. They range from production support, administrative assistance and day-to-day responsibilities, and more. Curated specifically around the individual, our internship and apprenticeship opportunities offer a behind-the-scenes look at the company’s creative process and the responsibilities and duties associated with running and sustaining a company.
